Owe him? She could have cursed him into oblivion if she had wanted to...but then Ellie was reminded of the fact that she COULD not perform magic anymore without alerting infected. So she bit her tongue, almost to the point that half of it was lying in her mouth. She hoped that Joel and her would come to some kind of mutual liking for one another soon. Otherwise this trip was going to take twice as long and be twice as big a pain in the ass. Oh well...she knew that whatever he dished out, she would be able to throw back ten-fold. She looked up as he said that he was going to take the couch while she took one of the bedrooms. What...he thought she was going to be able to go to sleep alone now? No, she had tried that and they had almost died. She wasn't leaving this guy's side, even if it meant that she would have to sleep on the fucking floor!
"Oh...well..." she said, shuffling her feet slightly. "I thought that I would stay out here too...with you..."
Ellie wouldn't admit that she was afraid or anything...but sh really didn't want to be alone after watching some guy get his brains blown out. And even though Joel had said that the house was secure...you never could be one hundred percent sure that someone or something would find its way to weasel inside. No. It was definitely better that they stayed together so that they could cover one another. Even though Joel apparently insisted that she not use a gun. One day maybe he would ACTUALLY give her something to protect herself with, but until that day happened...Ellie was going to be on him like white on rice.
She set her backpack up on the floor and curled up with it resting under her head. The bed would have DEFINITELY been the more comfortable choice, but Ellie didn't care. She was determined to stay with Joel. Besides...it wasn't so bad, and with how utterly exhausted she felt, she doubted that it would take long for her to pass out anyway. She pressed her cheek into the rough canvas of her green backpack and glanced up at the older man from her little spot on the, barely, carpeted floor.
"So...you...said you had a daughter?" she asked gently, hoping to make some kind of conversation with the man. "What was her name?"
Ellie hoped she wasn't over-stepping her boundaries here...but she thought that it was an innocent enough question. Besides, if they were going to be traveling together than they might as well get to know one another right? She couldn't imagine them making this entire trip as strangers...she would at least like for them to be friends. Ellie couldn't remember the last time she had actually had a friend that she could trust. She got along fine with her housemates at Hogwarts...but after her parents stopped writing to her...things just made her a bit bitter and more of a recluse. She found herself in the owlery every day...just waiting for a letter. More than once her House Master Professor Potter had chased her back down to the dorms. It got harder and harder to leave when the letters became few and far between.
"I think I need another joke to lighten the mood..."
Reaching into her bag, she settled herself closer to the sofa beside him and cleared her throat.
"Yesterday I accidentally swallowed some food coloring. The doctor says I'm OK, but I feel like I've dyed a little inside."
She giggled and glanced up at Joel. Well...she had a book with one hundred and eighty-five pages of these...one of them was bound to make him at least chuckle.
"I tried to look up impotence on the Internet but nothing came up." she paused and tilted her head. "I don't get it..."
